This film is shaped by archival images: some intimate, captured by amateur camcorders, others anonymous, taken from surveillance cameras. The filmmaker (Dida, VdR 2021) makes them all his own, changing the tones of their colours, using them as a backdrop to narrate his biography as a pacifist enlisted to fight in the Balkan wars at the end of the 1990s.

The Cuckoo follows the story of Sian, a lodger who is taken in by Nick and Jessica. They have just bought the house of their dreams, a grand doer-upper in the countryside town that Jessica grew up in. However, as the financial crisis hits the family fall on tough times and suddenly their home is on the line.

The film then concentrates on him coming to terms with his memories of his time as a guerilla, when he found his first love, his 'sister-in-arms', who betrayed him fifty years ago. The film also investigates the relationship between the young biologists and nature, and the process of reaching adulthood. The title of the film, The Nest, stands for the surroundings of living nature (the forest, the marshes, the coast) and more generally for the small fatherland that has to maintain its position among great powers such as Russia, Germany and America: countries that largely shape the fate of the characters.
